Why Choose Mahara Jiujitsu?

Our mission is to provide a first class Brazilian Jiujitsu environment that is inclusive and welcome for everyone.

Whether your goal is to be a world champion or to simply leave your comfort zone, we provide an environment where everyone can achieve together. Ultimately our goal is to improve peoples lives through JiuJitsu.

Our community here at Mahara Jiujitsu is diverse, friendly, inclusive and above all the people here a fun to train with. Our BJJ Classes are taken by a former Royal Marine Commando Physical training instructor, so all of the classes are taught by a veteran instructor with a plethora of teaching techniques to suit everyones needs.

Our Brazilian Jiujitsu training will inspire you much like our current students to become passionate about the sport, but also about grappling as a whole. We not only teach BJJ techniques, but wrestling, judo techniques in both the Gi, No-Gi but also submission grappling, this is all incorporated in our 16 week program, designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels .

Brazilian Jiujitsu is a self-defence skill, but if you have a competitive spirit, there are plenty of BJJ Competitions and Tournaments in Devon and the South West to sink your teeth into.

Mahara Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy caters for both men and women of all ages and walks of life. If self motivation and progression is what you are after, then under the guidance of Exeter BJJ Head Coach, James Hodges gradings and BJJ belt promotions happen when a student hits the right requirement ability.

Above all, here at Mahara Jiujitsu we would like to welcome you in advance and hope to see you on the mat !

Adam Lison

Mahara Jiujitsu Head Coach

I first started Brazilian JiuJitsu in 2014 when I was surfing and working in North Devon, I trained under James Hodges of Exeter BJJ (current coach and Academy affiliate). I fell in love with training and realised how transferable BJJ was to my life. Since then I’ve spent time at BJJ schools all around the world, including the UK, Portugal and the USA. As I’ve travelled and trained, I have developed a coaching style that is inclusive for all manners of learning, this coupled with being a former Royal Marines Commando Physical Training Instructor of 22 years, has set me in fantastic stead for developing a learning environment and BJJ community everyone can enjoy. Brazilian Jiujitsu or Submission Grappling I like to refer it to sometimes is fantastic for all walks of life. I have trained with Doctors, Builders, Scientists, Project Managers and Olympians both male and female. The one thing that resinates with them all is the passion and addiction Jiujitsu brings you.

I hope to see you on the mats !
